S.O.S.

This is a very good description of me every most days.

I have been reading on other blogs that Google Friend Connect is going away in March........why???   Does anyone know the answer?  What are we supposed to do?

I joined Facebook under duress.  I find it boring and still can't seem to find my way around it.  Don't get me started with the games.  Good for families living far apart to keep up perhaps.  I personally would rather talk on the phone or just email.   I do adore Pinterest and Twitter.

I admit if I lose followers, I will not enjoy blogging as much as I do.  And will lose motivation.  Are there tutorials for switching over to Networked Blogs?  I tried to follow a blog today, it went through Facebook, but I am not showing up on the blog although it accepted me when I hit the follow button.  My avatar is not the one I want to use for blogging, I don't like that my full name shows up, I am really very annoyed with this whole thing.

This is NOT me, just a representation of how I am feeling!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  1. I am going to be returning to read comments. That's because I'm standing RIGHT NEXT TO YOU in the HELP ME spot. I don't have facebook. I honestly just don't want one. I tried to set one up for my blog, but it still doesn't work right (don't know what I did wrong) and won't let me do the networked blogs thingie.

    Frustrated.
    AND blond.
It's a terrible place to be.

  2. Hello Barbara:
We are afraid that we can be of little help as far as Facebook is concerned as we have given the whole thing a very wide berth.

But, no Followers....we should be distraught. We love to see their cheery faces appear when we open up the blog. We quite agree, blogging would not be the same without them. There shall have to be a mass blogprotest!!

  3. Barbara, I did not know this and this upsets me greatly! I do have a Facebook account that the Mister set up for me before I ever started blogging. I've never used it -- not once. Facebook does not appeal to me in the least.

I don't like the fact that our last names would automatically show up on the follow thingie. Most of us talk about the general area where we live, and I think giving our full names out invades our privacy and makes us feel less secure. This is a bad idea on someone's part.

Let's all keep in touch on this thing. Maybe we can help each other.

  4. I don't have a clue what is going on either, but I will be glued to anyone who talks about it. I don't like facebook either. I will be monitoring all your replies to see what's up! Thanks for bringing this up.

  5. I am a moron when it comes to this kind of stuff. It was a miraculous feat when I figured out how to even start the blog!
    Hang in there,

  6. I had no idea this was happening! I don't have a Facebook account either. Like you I LOVE pinterest and spend more time tweeting. I can't understand why they would get rid of GFC but maybe they want everyone to sign on to Google+. I'll be back again soon to see what everyone else says!

I'm repinning that Facebook pin too-love it!

    Best wishes,
    Natasha.

  9. Good question. It's funny how so many of us did not know this! I saw it on another blog and said to myself..WHY? Why do they have to change things? Guess it gives some geek a job..he (i'm sure it's a he) sit's at his desk and thinks how can I confuse the world of bloggers and make myself look so smart! I'm sure of it...Why cant they leave it alone???
Guess we better have fun as it will all be a big disaster come March..

  10. I guess I'm the odd man out! I have a facebook page, but it's under my name not my blog. I've used it for a long time and don't mind it. I didn't set up a facebook page for the blog because I felt it would be redundant. I don't do the games because I think it's lame. I kind of doubt they are doing away with Google Friend Connect- I'm trying to search and find out where that info came from.

  11. "I do not like this, said Sam I Am!" I have read on other blogs about this but I am no help as to why, the transition, or how! Can we launch a protest?!!

  12. Hi Barbara, I wasn't aware of this upcoming change. If you find out more and would be so kind as to post further information, i.e., how do we cope...it would be greatly appreciated.
    Take care,
    Beth

  14. I may set up -- or have my goddaughter set up -- a page for Buttercup. I don't want to mix my facebook page, primarily family, with blogging.

  15. P.S. I'll figure out how to follow along with my blog buddies. Don't worry I'm not going anywhere.

  16. I read this somewhere too, but I have no idea what it means or when it is happening. I am on Facebook, not for games but mostly because my high school class has all gotten back together there. I suppose if we have to use FB for the blogs, I will start a separate one for I Need Mom! I wouldn't want my personal one and my blog to overlap. So, does this mean we need to be writing down the web addresses of the blogs we follow? Are we going to wake up one morning and not have anyone show up in our feeds??

  17. I always enjoy coming to read you Barbara. I am not big fan of Facebook either; I was obliged to join, don't play games, just discovered Pinterest and love it; have no idea what Google Friend Connect.
I just downloaded Google Chrome and my blogger problems are gone for the moment. I have no idea what Google Friend Connect.
My life seems to revolve around my blog and the friends that I follow.
Keep me posted on what is happening to us please.

  18. I came back hoping to find some help. I see I just found commiseration from others who don't know what to do.

    Sigh.

  19. Barbara, I had no idea this was happening, either. Is it just the google connect "friends" or is it the friends *and* the followers? I've been on facebook for a long time -- since 2007 -- and while I do enjoy it very much, I also like it differently and apart from my blog! Yikes! :)

  20. Hi Barbara,

I signed up for Facebook about 2 weeks ago and have not gone back to it. I'm still trying to figure out Twitter. :-) Google + will be in place of Google Friend Connect. I think.

  22. Hi, Dearest Barbara!!!
You are obviously in touble but I'm no help either...
Although I have facebook account, I haven't visited there much lately and find it really hard to figure out the application.
Crossing my fingers for you, my dear friend☆☆☆

  23. No, I don't do Facebook either. What? No Friends? No Followers? I've not heard of this.

  24. I have linked to this post today and I think I have good news for you via one of my commenters. ☺

  25. Well, I don't do Facebook, so, yes, it has been nice to see that someone followed my blog after all. Will it be sad to see that feature gone? Certainly... However, I still hope that people will leave comments. :)

I have started to bookmark all blogs I enjoy visiting and will make more rounds in the next few weeks. Thus I am prepared once the feature will really be deleted. Moreover, I enjoy the option to subscribe my email which you can also add to your blog. Thus I really don't miss any of the posts of my favorite blogs. :)

  26. I found this information under Google on line:

Google Friend Connect—Friend Connect allows webmasters to add social features to their sites by embedding a few snippets of code. We're retiring the service for all non-Blogger sites on March 1, 2012. We encourage affected sites to create a Google+ page and place a Google+ badge on their site so they can bring their community of followers to Google+ and use new features like Circles and Hangouts to keep in touch.

It appears the change only affects non-Blogger sites so I guess that would mean bloggers using for example Wordpress would be affected? It's very confusing how this change will affect all of us and I'm not sure if I want to set up a Google+ account.

I have a FB personal account for close friends and family but don't want it tied to my personal blog in any manner especially where any personal information is shared like my name. It's not clear to me how to separate a FB page for a blog from one's personal FB page. If anybody understands how to do that let me know. Just not sure why there is a need to have a FB page for one's blog.

  27. I have a FB account but use it rarely. Family and very close Friends only......

  28. Barbara,
When you get all this figured out, just let me know! As I understand it, only people on Wordpress and Typepad will be affected by the discontinuance of GFC. That's me! I tried to put a Networked Blogs badge on my blog, but it never worked. And I use Networked Blogs to automatically feed updates to Facebook, but it never does it automatically. Whew! At least we're not letting our brains go to mush.
