Happy Memorial Day

The patriot's blood is the seed of Freedom's tree.  ~Thomas Campbell

I am laying low these past few days, I need to focus on improving energy level, while still weeding and cleaning and planting.

Stone to be added to flower bed

Also to be added to a flower bed
I did a very simple but colorful table for a 'virtual' Memorial Day lunch.

It has been a rainy and dreary week, and the sun came out later in the afternoon.  I am also having camera problems and I apologize for photos, some light, some dark.

Everything on the table is from Christmas Tree Shop, except the oldie tablecloth I purchased unused on EBay.

The Coca Cola glasses were left in the cabinet when I moved into my previous house.

I purchased a bunch of wildflowers at a farm stand in New Jersey.  I distributed them among the three bottles.  The sparkly thing on the end is something I need for a retirement dinner next week.

I have never seen an iris this shade of purple.  I am not doing it justice.  I always associate iris with Memorial weekend  for some reason.

I also purchased my first sweet cherries of the season.  I adore fresh cherries, but I never eat maraschino or cherry pie, for that matter!

My virtual menu would include sliders, hot dogs with all the usual toppings, traditional cold salads like potato and macaroni, iced tea, fresh fruit and ice cream.

I will take time to remember the real reason for this holiday.

While dusting my blinds I snapped the flag in the breeze

For my stateside friends, enjoy the three day weekend and be safe!

I will be joining the following parties during the week

  3. Yes, it is good to remember...

Your table looks beautiful and festive. I just bought a bag of cherries today myself. I love them and didn't know it until a few short years ago when I finally tried one. I'm ridiculously unadventurous in the food department.

A happy and blessed weekend to you!

  4. I love it all because I love the red, white, and blue. Those purple iris are awesome too. (I associate geraniums with Memorial Day. I don't know why. I think we put them on graves when I was little. )

Loved the shot of the flag flying in the breeze through the blinds, too.

  5. And I almost bought some cherries today but passed them by. Now, I wish I had.

  6. Dearest Barbara,
Oh, what a wonderful memorial day tablescape☆☆☆
Iris is so gorgeous and I think purple color is popular but like you said rare shade, isn't it♪ And I LOVED to see the Coca Cola glass, haha so reminiscent as I broke all of mine. I clearly remember the young day I felt really refreshed when I first had it.

Have a relaxing weekend and I hope you'll start feeling better. I also am struggling with the weeding(#^.^#)

    Love you always, xoxo Miyako*

  8. Hello Barbara:
Your table certainly looks most attractive and we particularly like the informal arrangements of the flowers. As for the little pots into which you have tucked the cherries - pure delight!

  13. Beautiful table and sentiments too. I simply adore fresh cherries! I don't like maraschino's either...yuck. Now cherry pie is one of my favorites! My mother used to make them like no other...tart and sublime.

I hope you have a restful and fun weekend! It's so hot & humid here that it's kinda miserable to be outside.

I am hoping I haven't hurt anyone's feelings about the parties but I feel just as you. As fun as it is to join them I found myself trying to link up to so many. I feel a freedom knowing I'm not going to party for a while.

  55. Barbara~ Love the flowers on your table~ especially the iris! Your cherries look delicious and perfect served up in your flag topped cupcake bowl!

  56. That photo of the cemetary is really, really, really one of the best I have ever seen. It captures the way I feel every single time one of these holidays comes around and I think about how many people have lost their lives in wars. It makes me so sad. That eagle just looks so majestic, though. Like he is the protector of all souls. Really cool picture! The purple irises on your table are beautiful! I love that deep, dark hue. Your virtual menu has made me look at the popcorn I'm eating for "dinner" with absolute disgust! :-) I need some meat and potatoes!!! I've been out working in that dang yard, though, so it was too late to fix myself anything. I'll probably eat a hotdog for breakfast in the morning now! :-) As for the maraschino cherries...don't worry about it. I'm eating your share after sipping the last of my whiskey sours! I love those things! Have a great weekend!!!
