Summer Book Reading

Shirley Temple
July 27th is National Curly Hair Day.  Have a good one to all those lucky folks with curly hair, you guys always look younger with curls.

I love cookbooks.  I think I actually love reading a cookbook more than I like to cook.  (eating, well, my cup runneth over  there).  I read a cookbook like a novel. The author is always the hero/heroine to me.

With the Internet and blogging, I have not purchased a cook book in a couple of years.  I actually paired down my collection when I downsized.  I felt this book just had my name on it.

Technically my initials which the nice staff at Susan Branch's blog placed on the package before they shipped it out.

Such a nice lady, Susan Branch.  I purchased the Heart of the Home cookbook back in the '80's.  I sent her a letter and she graciously responded.  I also have Christmas from the Heart of the Home and Vineyard Seasons.  All great.  Tried many of the recipes from all three in my younger, having-someone-to cook- for  days.  Always a big hit.

What I love the best about Susan's books are her illustrations and quotes.  Seriously, she could do a book just with quotes.

And always gracious, she signed my copy.  I am sure I will be whipping up a dish from this book within the next 58 days.

I will be joining Sally for Blue Monday.

  1. Cara Barbara che belle cose hai presentato!Amo tanto film vecchi di quella bimba dai riccioli d'oro!Baci,Rosetta

  2. Looks like you found a nice addition to your collection! I look forward to seeing what you make:@)

  3. I've never heard of her and her cookbooks. They look wonderful. I will be sharing this with my sister who collects cookbooks and loves them like you do.

  4. Allowing some time there for the weather to cool a bit? How sweet of Susan B. She seems like just such a gal who'd be so thoughtful to her readers and customers. Very nice post!

Curly hair day? Would that the 27th would be the only one I had to endure. =D

  5. I am with you - I adore Susan Branch! Her recipes are wonderful, and her outlook on life is something to aspire to.

  6. Dearest Barbara,
Oh, I see how wonderful the lady "Susan Branch" is♬♬♬ And also I can get your point that how wonderful books are in these day and age, though♡♡♡ You have really marvelous responses from her.
I will looking forward to the posts of yours from her recipes.

Oh, and I SO wish to have a Curly Hair!!! Mine is so straight p;) I never knew America has "National Curly Hair Day"

Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*

  7. I am definitely a bummer on National Curly Hair Day. My hair is board straight! Can't wait to see what you fix out of your new book! It looks like FUN! :)

  8. I love Susan Branch and her illustrations! This looks like a good cookbook. My Mom 'reads' cookbooks also! Hugs, Linda

  9. I am so with you on the cookbooks...they are like novels to me too! I really need to start purging some, but every time I try, I can't go through with it.

Would you believe I don't have a Susan Branch cookbook? I may need to remedy that soon!

  10. I have all of Susan's books...she is so creative and sweet. And very gracious, she visited my blog. Do you follow hers? I love The Summer Book and keep it here at the lake. Even the pictures inspire me to make each meal fun and delicious!

I will have to remember National Curly Hair Day tomorrow when I have my straightener out!!

  11. Hi Barbara!

I bought my first Susan Branch cookbook "The Heart of the Home" at the "Bunch of Grapes" bookstore in Martha's Vineyard, where she lives many years ago. It was also autographed. I did not know who she was at the time, but I was attracted to her art work and quotes,as well as her recipes, and soon became her fan. I've since purchased many more of her books, including a recipe keeper book that I am writing up for my daughter. I just love her illustrations and her blog is so much fun to read.

I have slightly curly hair so I will celebrate tomorrow! :)

Thanks for your comment on my blog today --it is a subject we all should be talking about without fear or embaressment.

  12. Hi Barbara,

Susan Branch is a favorite of mine too! Although I don't have any of her cookbooks I do enjoy her blog.I plan on getting her 2013 calendar. Enjoy reading and can't wait to see what recipe you will share :)

  13. What a fun package to receive. I have that same cookbook and a few of her other ones. I have loved her artwork for years and now love to visit her blog. She has such a happy outlook on life.

  14. Love your humorous approach about cooking books- I think I'm in the same boat! Food can look so attractive in the pictures! That cookbook looks so familiar. I used to get a catalog from a company with lots of goodies to buy and some of their own cookbooks. Can't think of their name right now though...but your cookbook looks like one from them!
I'm afraid I won't be able to celebrate National Curly Hair day! Mine couldn't be straighter!

  15. Dear Barbara, your collections of cookbook is very beautiful. I know Shirley Temple. When i was a child i used to see her movies, i liked them very much!

  16. I wander over to Susan's blog every now and again. It's just so pretty! Enjoy your new cookbook.

  17. Hi Barbara! Oh, I just loved Shirley Temple, well, I still do. I have most of her movies. Wasn't she the most darling little girl? I read her life story and it said her mother rolled her hair each night with rag strips. Now I cannot celebrate that day as my hair is as straight as a board. always wanted curly hair.
But, I do like Susan Branch too. I love her sweet art work and have her calendar up now. Do you remember when she had a page with a recipe and her art work on it in a magazine? I think it was Country Living way back in the 80s.
    Be a sweetie,
    shelia ;)

  18. I don;t have her cookbook but I do have a calendar and it is adorable, as is everything she does.

  19. Hi Barbara!

Susan Branch is one of my favorite illustrators. Her items used to be available at Hallmarks, not sure about nowadays. I also like her blog.

As a child I watched old Shirley Temple movies every weekend. Sweet movies.

    xoxo Bunny Jean

  20. I've always enjoyed the Susan Branch cookbooks and love her illustrations, too. Enjoy!

  21. Can't wait to see what you whip up from your new cookbook!
xo Cathy....who always wished for curly hair

  22. Wish I had curly hair! Can't wait to see what you make from this wonderful cookbook :)

  23. I enjoy her books almost as much as I enjoy your posts. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Blessings...Mary

  24. Barbara, I have loved her cookbooks since the 80s. The illustrations are just gorgeous. I will read a cookbook over a novel anyday!

  25. Barb, Love the Summer Cookbook. I will be watching for some delish coming out it. Have a great weekend. Ginger

  26. Oh those curls! I didn't know it was Curly Hair Day, maybe because I don't have curly hair, straight as an arrow. I've been like you and down sized my cookbook collection. This looks like a great cookbook and the illustrations are beautiful. Thanks for sharing Barbara.
