The Scent of Spring

Spring is going well here so far.  Heavy rains twice caused a leak from my roof where it ends up seeping into my living room ceiling!  That only postpones my buying a lap top, unfortunately.

But the good news is, after about four years of no blossoms, only leaves, my three lilac bushes - Lenni, Lili, and Lila - are blooming again!

I am overjoyed.  It is one of my favorite plants.  It smells so good, wish I had a scratch-and-sniff feature.

I will cut some and make a bouquet or two.  I am happy that they survived the polar vortex this winter.  I think the reason they bloomed again is that I have left them "au natural" - no clipping for several seasons.  My landscaper used to mow them down!

I had to seriously trim back my fig tree.  Francesca, as I named her, has not been producing any edible fruit but had gotten so out of proportion.  It is a little sad to see her in this state.   Maybe she will come back eventually, and bear some fruit.

Hope your garden is making you happy!

xo

  5. Oh! No wonder your poor lilacs weren't blooming. They can only be trimmed back a third. If I get too ambitious, mine won't bloom. Yours sure look happy this year! Hope that the roof gets fixed...looks like it could be a damp season.

  11. Hi Barbara, I like the names you've given to your plants:):) The lilacs are gorgeous! We have recently moved and I was able to save a couple of my lilacs in containers. They too finally bloomed and it made me so happy! It's sad that we only get to see them flowering once a year. I'm glad you are enjoying the warmer weather after the brutal winter you had. xxleslie

  12. It is just WAY too funny that you name your trees and bushes!!! I guess when you try to talk to them and coax them into cooperating, it's good to be able to address them by name! :-)

  16. Hi Barbara,

I'm so glad to see that your Lilacs are blooming again!! Love that you name your trees and shrubs! :) Unfortunately, Lilacs don't do well here in the south because our winters don't get cold enough; I see them around occasionally, but not very often. I'm sorry to hear about the leak in your ceiling; our previous house had a leak and few things are more frustrating to deal with. I really hate that you're having to postpone getting a new laptop.

Sorry I'm just now getting by for a visit -- we were out of town last week, and I spent yesterday trying to recuperate. I hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend!

    Hugs,
